The Homestead Projects For Street Children

Homestead Logo The Homestead is a registered Non-Profit Organization based in Cape Town, which was established in 1982. The Organization’s main objective is to assist boys living on the streets of Cape Town.

The Homestead’s education programme strives to provide children that successfully transition away from street life with a stable economic future as well as with the opportunity to reach their full potential, for instance as a plumber, a policeman, a social worker, an executive pastry chef or even a lawyer. This means the Homestead has a huge education task on its hands with up to 100 chronically neglected, abused, emotionally and educationally deprived ex street children living at the Homestead who require: basic education stabilisation and assessment; a varied, creative and child specific approach to education in general; a basic internal education programme for those boys not yet able to attend school; professional external education assessments; access to private and specialised schools for children with behavioural and education challenges; creative education alternatives towards economic independence for children with severely limited education capabilities; and then just the day to day general school slog of uniforms, transport, extramural activities, books, stationary, school fees, computers, internet access for homework projects and all the normal costs that go into educating a child today. It is a huge task made bigger by the need to use over 10 different education institutions spread across the city and by the need to accommodate low functioning children, children not ready to go to school and a number of boys currently doing Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. This is a task all made possible by your exceptionally generous donations, donations that make it possible for our boys to turn their dreams into reality, that provide education opportunities which create viable futures, that keep children from returning to the street and that break destructive family cycles. It is an incredibly special thing you do and for which we and the boys are extremely grateful. Thank you.
