Solomon Tshekiso Plaatje (1876-1932), a South African literary pioneer and human rights activist, was the first general secretary of the South African Native National Congress, later to be called the African National Congress. Plaatje edited several black newspapers in Mafikeng and Kimberley, and also campaigned extensively abroad against the suppression of black people in South Africa.
