Play is not always innocent. In fact, it seems to be a healthy way in which children are able to access their shadow side. A quick search on the internet reveals names of games such as Deadbox, Ghost in the Graveyard, Bad Egg and Murder. Shadow, as a subject in my paintings, is often about the unconscious as a source of creativity, as illustrated in the painting of my father’s sculptures and their shadows cast onto his studio wall.
