Born Hendrik Christiaan Niemann, 27 April 1972, Bloemfontein

Stylistically, Hennie Niemann Jnr has developed from an earthy, expressive Krampe influence, evident in his early energetic wildlife studies, to a much more stylized approach influenced by Van Essche, Picasso and the Fauves. The uniqueness of Niemann’s oil paintings is underpinned by his distinctive, individual style and technique; applied irrespective of the subject matter he chooses.

Inspired by a recent trip to Spain, the predominant subject matter of Niemann’s paintings has become the dark haired Catalonian girls in vibrantly colourful interiors. The prevailing impression communicated by these paintings is of a very painterly approach where the artist’s mark-making and palette generates drama and excitement beyond the sultry moods of his mysterious models. The viewer is treated to a feast of colour and the passionate display of technical mastery.
