Born Warrick Robertson Kemp, 12th October 1968, Cape Town

When Warrick Kemp began sculpting in metal, he immediately experienced a strong connection to his creative core. He feels that his sculptures are held together by line - which he sees as the key to his artistic expression. His early works were based on the human form, with dance and movement often being the central theme. Kemp’s work has progressed naturally towards abstraction in the process of defining the initial linear image, expressing the forms and defining the mood.

Commenting on the ‘Bull’, Kemp says; … dance and movement are still key. The bull, enraged, is almost turning on himself, surging upwards to heavy shoulders and a massive neck. I like to use these folded curves, creating in them a symmetry, which emphasises both power and vulnerability in the bull. Symmetry is at the core of my expression; the line must be in harmony and echo the message throughout the sculpture.
