The painting ‘Seël’ refers to travelling as a form of communication, but more specifically, in this instance, travelling through the Free State. The conversation between the two scenes; telephone poles on the one side and clouds that are passing like smoke signals on the other, refers directly to the elements of communication. The use of red in both scenes as well as the thin red line that separates but also joins them, recalls the old tradition of tying a string around a parcel and sealing it with red resin.
