This painting depicts a man who is being persecuted for his need for liberty – freedom of expression and human rights. The state, the church and the army/police prepare to grill the victim who lies trapped, awaiting his fate, his forced-confession note in hand. The policeman marches to orders from the seated prosecutors to start the fire with the match stick in the box he holds, while the priest holds the victim’s head and says a prayer. Despite the imminent death of the victim, most of the conspirators look away, disinterested in his fate. This painting was inspired by Jacques-Louis David’s masterpiece, ‘The Death of Marat’.
